The official Opening Ceremony of the 28th Winter Universiade was held on 29 January in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Almaty Arena Sport Complex with 12000 seats was completely full and the 2-hour grandiose show impressed everybody. According to the organisers it can be considered as one of the best in the whole history of the World University Games.

Ayza Imambek, a young Kazakh figure skater, took an oath on behalf of athletes to compete fairly at the opening ceremony of the Universiade-2017. This gesture perfectly shows the commitment of the FISU family to the fair play ideals.

“It was a great honor for me to take an oath on behalf of all athletes, - said Ayza - I can’t describe in words how much I’m proud to be trusted to do it. I believe all competitions will have Fair Play rule.” (source: www.almaty2017.com)

Fair Play is also officially represented during the sport event of the International University Sports Federation (FISU): the pavilion of the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP) was stormed by the visitors already on the first day.  Athletes, coaches, sport leaders and volunteers can have the opportunity to get to know the history of the CIFP and the role models, they can learn fair play values through interesting short films and a unique brochure. The young athletes can collect special fair play pins as a nice memory from the University Games.

Dr. Jeno Kamuti, President of the CIFP said: “I was overwhelmed by the positive welcome of the FISU family. The local organisers do an excellent and professional job – based on my personal experience I can tell that this is one of the best Winter Universiade and it is a privilege for the CIFP that we can spread the fair play spirit among the young generation. It is already a tradition thanks to our strong and fruitful cooperation with FISU.

Mr. Kamuti added: “The Opening Ceremony was a spectacular show and besides Mr. Oleg Matytstin, the President of the FISU, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbajev, President of Kazakhstan welcomed the guests. IOC President Thomas Bach sent a video message to the athletes and the organisers – I was proud and moved by experiencing that the President of the IOC and the President of the FISU both emphasized the importance of the spirit of fair play in their speeches.”
