Robert Gara received a World Fair Play Career Diploma

Dr. Jenő Kamuti, the President of the International Fair Play Committee, presented the World Fair Play Career Diploma to Hungarian-born fencer and college teacher Robert Gara at the international fencing competition held on the island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean Sea.

After the failure of the 1956 revolution in Hungary, Róbert Gara emigrated to France at the age of 18, after graduating from high school. Then he graduated from the pedagogical college in Strasbourg, where he met a medical student from Guadeloupe during his studies, whom he married in France and they had two children. After graduation they settled on the 300,000 island of Guadeloupe, a Caribbean island belonging to France.

Róbert Gara organized and created fencing there. He recruited and invited French and other fencing masters from different countries, with whom, together with the help of the local government, they created the conditions for the island to have a decisive and effective fencing sport for the French national team.

The first result was achieved by Laura Flessel, who became the individual Olympic champion in Barcelona ahead of the Hungarian Tímea Nagy, but also at the last Paris Olympics, five fencers from Guadeloupe were in the French national team, who achieved two silver medals, one bronze medal and a fourth place.

Based on the decision of the International Fair Play Committee, Róbert Gara received a Career Diploma in recognition of his outstanding performance. The Award was presented personally by President Jenő Kamuti in Guadeloupe.
