"With the launch of its award-giving programme for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, the motherland of Eugenio Monti, an Olympic champion and the first-ever recipient of the recognition back at the Innsbruck 1964 Games.

Apart from securing bronze at the time, Monti won admiration for lending the bolt from his sled to his British competitors after realising they had a broken one. The duo of Tony Nash and Robin Dixon eventually won gold while the Italian pair, including Monti settled for bronze.

With a view of recognising acts of fair play in Monti’s homeland, the CIFP has launched nominations for Milano-Cortina 2026 in which winners will be selected by a jury composed of representatives from the CIFP, the IOC and the media at the end of the Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Kirsty Coventry said. “Fair play is the heartbeat of the Olympic Movement. As we return to the mountains of Italy, we are reminded of Eugenio Monti’s incredible legacy.”

With its launch, the Fair Play Awards will once again recognise acts of sportsmanship, integrity and solidarity as the Winter Games also return to Italy for the first time in two decades.

“Italy is the birthplace of our first-ever winner, making this edition particularly emotional,” CIFP President Sunil Sabharwal said. “We encourage everyone—from the athletes in the village to the fans at home—to help us identify those moments that define the true Olympic spirit.”"
