Upholding Fair Play: Coventry’s Call for Equality and Neutrality in Sport

At  the 'European Evening of Sport' in Brussels this high-profile gathering of Olympic and European leaders, IOC President Kirsty Coventry delivered a compelling message: sport must remain a neutral ground, where every eligible athlete, team, and official can participate without discrimination or political interference.

Equality for All in Sport

Coventry’s core message was simple yet powerful: “in sport, everyone is equal.” She stressed that the Olympic Movement should respect universal access, meaning no athlete or official should be excluded based on their nationality, politics, or background.

She also reminded the audience that all voices in sport deserve equal respect, every National Olympic Committee (NOC), federation, and individual athlete should be heard, regardless of whether they come from the global north or south.

Neutrality as a Pillar of Fair Play

Coventry went further to call on governments and event organisers to safeguard sport’s neutrality. She argued that political interference undermines the integrity of competition and dilutes sport’s role as a “beacon of hope.”

Her vision of “responsible autonomy” emphasizes that sports bodies must govern themselves, hold themselves accountable, stay transparent, and protect their independence - especially in an era marked by geopolitical pressure.

Kirsty Coventry’s statements at the European Evening of Sport resonate deeply with the mission of the International Fair Play Committee. Her commitment to equality, nondiscrimination, and political neutrality reinforces fair play as more than just a slogan, it is a lived principle that must guide how sport is governed and practiced.
